This refers to ‘Time to go, Mr Sreedharan’, July 20. As someone who has seen the working of CAG for many decades, I can say that not all comments of CAG are valid, nor are they made with full understanding of the issues. This is because the CAG does not have experts but only accountants.
CAG reports are also tabled on the floor of the two Houses of Parliament. What has been the follow-up on these reports? Almost none.
Could the government tell us the reasons. CAG had introduced a system a few years ago of co-opting experts in various fields at the time of audits. This system no longer seems in vogue. I do not find any of the ‘observations’ or ‘objections’ mentioned by Sunil Jain serious enough to damn the DMRC model.
What matters is that the DMRC model has delivered unlike in the case of over 90 per cent of the projects in India, including those of the NHAI.
