After reducing the role of the government in appointment of judges quite considerably, the judicial system will find the tables are likely to get reversed. Law Minister Veerappa Moily has now stated that the government may have to take a fresh look at the method in which judges are appointed to the higher judiciary. Moily has also said the government will come up with a comprehensive bill to deal with complaints of corruption against judges.
The minister’s statements come in the wake of the controversy over promoting Justice P D Dinakaran to the Supreme Court. If the judiciary is upset about this, it has only itself to blame for it adopted an ostrich-like attitude on most serious issues including something as trivial as judges declaring their assets.
