LSI India's "Backpack Program," enters its sixth successful Year in India
Announcement / Corporate June 30, 2009, 20:54 IST

Program extends reach to encompass more schools and children in Bangalore

LSI Corporation India today announced the continuance of their “Backpack” community initiative into its sixth consecutive year. “Backpack” is LSI’s community initiative designed to reduce the number of drop-outs and to better the lives of children in Government schools situated in the rural areas of Bangalore and Pune.

This year “Backpack” will encompass 8,000 children across 78 schools, a significant increase over the reach of the programme in the previous year.  The programme provides a backpack containing books and other requisite items of stationary for an entire academic year to primary and secondary students.

“Backpack” is an initiative driven by employees of LSI without any support from third party organizations. 50 – 70 employees devote 20 person hours to conduct the survey that determines the reach of “Backpack,” in addition to contributing towards the books and other contents of the backpack.

“We are proud of the way this programme is progressing and so too of the manner in which it is run. We strongly believe that it is our responsibility to give back to the communities that host us in India and other locations across the globe,” said Mr. Pravin Desale, Managing Director, LSI India.

The program started with a basic objective of helping needy children complete their primary education. Over the past five years, this program has supported more than 14,000 children studying in many primary and middle-primary schools. In the current year's program, the number of children directly being helped will exceed 7,800. The corporate contribution has also been gradually enhanced every year after seeing the enthusiasm of the philanthrophy and community engagement team at LSI. Library support (donation of library books, book shelves, study charts, globes etc), sports equipment and other educational aides are also extended, which children have found helpful. This is accomplished by personal visits of LSI team members for on site to talk and provide mentorships.
