L&T bags Rs 844 crore order for Kakrapar Atomic Power Station
BS Reporter / Mumbai/ Ahmedabad Dec 09, 2009, 00:54 IST

Larsen & Toubro's (L&T) Infrastructure Operating Company – a part of its Construction Division (ECC), has secured one of the single largest construction orders in the country's nuclear power sector by winning a contract valued at Rs 844 crores from Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) for construction of the main plant civil works of reactor 3 and 4 at Kakrapar Atomic Power Project near Surat. in Gujarat.

NPCIL had earlier announced that it is expanding its capacity at the nuclear power plant by adding two nuclear reactors of 700 Mw each. The power project in Kakrapar already houses two nuclear reactors of 220 Mw.

"This is country's first 700 MW Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) plant being indigenously developed by NPCIL and L&T is proud to be associated with this prestigious project," said KV Rangaswami, president (construction) and member board, L&T in a press release.

The scope of work involves construction of reactor building, auxiliary buildings, waste management and exhaust ventilation building, heavy water upgrading plant, fabrication and erection of structural steel works involving civil, structural and architectural works.

The additional capacity of 1,400 Mw is expected to commission in next five years. The nuclear reactors are based on thermal heavy water technology and is believed to give substantial boost to the power requirement in the state of Gujarat.

With the additional capacity, wherein thermal heavy water technology will be used, the total capacity will be 1,840 Mw. The project is to be completed by L&T in 49 months.
