Ludhiana sewing machine industry in trouble
Vikas Sharma / New Delhi/ Chandigarh Sep 14, 2009, 00:25 IST

Tribulations for the sewing machine industry in Ludhiana that already is finding it tough to compete with machines from China continues unabated.

With the large share in industrial sewing machines already being moped by imported sewing machines from China, it is only the demand of domestic needs that the sewing machine industry in Ludhiana caters to.

However, now the industry is waging a battle against its own members.

Anil Kapoor, president, Ludhiana Sewing Machine Dealers and Assemblers Association, said, the grave of sewing machine industry in Ludhiana was being dug by its own members who arbitrarily have hiked the prices of body or cabinet of sewing machine.

The assemblers of sewing machine in Ludhiana have decided to boycott the sewing machine body manufacturers.

The sewing machine body or cabinet manufacturers in the last one month have raised the prices of body of sewing machine by 30-35 per cent.

“Around 10-15 members in Ludhiana who are engaged in the business of body making have unilaterally decided to hike the prices without any reason”, Kapoor said.

To further harass the assemblers, the manufacturers are demanding payments at the spot to deliver orders on time.

The body or cabinet of sewing machine is made of pig iron and weighs between 7 and 9 kg.

“Even though the prices of pig iron in international market have not changed much, the sewing machine body manufacturers have raised the prices,” Kapoor added.

The price of body of sewing machine in August was Rs 380, which is hovering around Rs 550 now.

“With body part manufacturers hiking prices, assemblers in Ludhiana have decided to stop purchasing the body from manufacturers till there budge from their stand.”

The sewing machine industry in Ludhiana, that comprises 400-odd tiny small units, caters to 90 per cent of the total sewing machines manufactured in India.
