Lupin launches Ceftriaxone in US
Our Corporate Bureau / Mumbai July 22, 2005
The Rs 1,200 crore Lupin Ltd has launched Ceftriaxone, the generic version of Rocephine, in the US market. Lupin had received the FDA approval for the generic product for the US market along with another generic company Sandoz. The patent of Rocephin marketed by Roche expired on July 19.

Lupin's generic launch was on the next day of the patent expiry, said Vinita Gupta, president, Lupin Pharmaceuticals Inc., the US subsidiary of Lupin Ltd. "So we will have the first entry advantage in the market along with the price competitiveness over the competitor," she added.

"At the cost that we are offering the product in the US market it is estimated that the value of the generic market is about $530 million," Gupta said.

The company had tied up with two US companies-Baxter Healthcare Corporation and Henry Schein, Inc to market the product in the country.

However, Gupta refused to tell anything about the nature of revenue sharing arrangement with the partners.

"Since the pricing and distribution of the product are in the control of the marketing partners, we cannot comment on those aspects," she said. But, we have the merit of sourcing the product from our Indian facility at Indian cost, she added.

Lupin also expects to launch 4 more products in the US market, for which the company has FDA approval. These products are in the therapeutic segment of cardiovascular and anti-infectives.

Lupin's non cephalosporin oral dosage facility located at Verna in Goa which recently went through US FDA inspection. The facility, commissioned in March 2004 was set up to enable the company's foray in non-cephalosporin oral dosage forms for advanced markets.

The facility approval will enable the company to significantly enhance its product offering in US, EU and other advanced markets. If the plant receives US FDA certification, it would be Lupin's eleventh plant to have the US approval.
