| Major water supply project for Rs 3,384 crore planned |

The Tamil Nadu government will take up drinking water projects worth Rs 3,384.84 crore across the state. While some of the projects will be funded by foreign banks like German-based KFW, the rest will be taken up along with the Union government and through internal funding.
Addressing the state assembly today, M K Stalin, deputy chief minister, Tamil Nadu government, said the government will implement a drinking water scheme in Vellore district at a cost of Rs 1,800 crore. Earlier, the cost of project was Rs 1,400 crore which has now been revised.
He added that the capacity was also revised to 270 million litres per day from the earlier 150 million litres.
The proposed scheme will have Cauvery as its water source. The scheme will benefit six corporations, five town panchayats and 64 villages in Vellore district. “We are looking for funds to expedite the project,” he added.
Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited will provide Rs 1,500 crore for the project, he noted.
Similarly, the government will take up drinking water projects in Virudunagar, Pudukottai, Kovilpatti, Kayalpatti, Tiruvanamallai, Pudukottai and Chennai with an outlay of around Rs 1,000 crore.
The state government along with the Union government will also take up water connectivity projects for 7,000 rural households with an outlay of around Rs 380.61 crore, said Stalin.
