Make an informed choice
Neha Chowdhry / New Delhi Jul 11, 2010, 00:35 IST

The weather and how much space you have are just two of the things you should keep in mind.

While the traditional model of seeking a breeder to help choose a dog is what many people fall back on, things are slowly changing. These days, potential pet owners looking for that perfect new addition to their homes have recourse to an ever-expanding network of Facebook pages, MySpace ads and a number of blogs where dog-lovers and animal-rights groups regularly post photographs and details of dogs up for adoption. Whether you want to adopt a stray or a pure bred, pedigreed pup, social media sites are helping engage aspiring pet owners.

Here are a couple of important things that Delhiites looking to bring a dog home should keep in mind.

Weather is an important factor. The hottest day this summer was a scorching 44.8 C, while on the coldest day last winter the maximum temperature dropped to a chilly 12.1 C. These extreme climatic conditions are tough enough on humans, but they are even tougher on dog breeds that are physiologically not suited to these extreme fluctuations in temperature.

Tandrali Kuli, executive member of Frendicoes, a dog shelter in the city, says, “Many wealthy families choose to keep breeds such as Huskies and St Bernards. These dogs are not suited to the Delhi weather, even if they are kept in air-conditioned rooms at all times.”

So what are the dog breeds most suited to Delhi? “Short-haired breeds work best here,” Kuli says. “The size of your dog should depend on the space you have. I would recommend large breeds only to those with ample space and time to tend to their needs.” She lists strays, Labradors, Beagles, Dachshunds and Dalmations as breeds suitable for Delhi.

Potential pet owners should also go to a reputated dog breeder, Kuli adds.

More people should consider taking in strays, Kuli recommends. The thought is echoed by Anjali Sharma, a lawyer and a member of the management committee of the Noida chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. “[Strays] are as intelligent as pedigreed dogs and, given the love and attention they deserve, are loyal companions and good guard dogs.”

In short, give a thought not just to what would best suit you, but also to the animal you will providing a home to.
