Service tax collection in Mangalore rose to Rs 170 crore as compared to Rs 124 crore last year, a jump of 40 per cent, John Joseph, commissioner of customs and central excise, Mangalore division said.
Taking part in an interactive session on indirect taxes with special reference to Customs Services and service tax at the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the commissioner said Mangalore had contributed to 3 per cent of the revenue collected as Customs and Central Excise.
Admitting that the Mangalore Commissionerate faced a shortage of staff, he said additional personnel numbering around 1,500 would be recruited across India but formalities in this regard could be completed only 2010.
The country was yet to acquire sophisticated equipment for checking bag and baggage, big containers or even carry out personal checks, he said.
A new x-ray clearance machine would be operational at the Bajpe Airport shortly but manual checks would never lose their importance in any case, he observed.
