Markets end flat

The Sensex has ended (provisional) at 15,943, up 27 points. The NSE Nifty has closed (provisional) at 4,758, up one point.

The markets have come off the day's high in late trades. The Sensex is now up 46 points at 15,962, and the Nifty is up eight points at 4,765.

Markets have surged over the 16K mark to a high of 16,061. The Sensex is now up 100 points at 16,016.

The Nifty is up 27 points at 4,785. The index has recovered 100 points from the day's low.

Bharti Airtel has surged 2.7% to Rs 309. Reliance Communications has gained 2% at Rs 168.

Hindustan Unilever has added 1.7% to Rs 235. However, teh other FMCG heavyweight, ITC, has slipped 1% to Rs 245.

Larsen & Toubro has advanced 1.6% to Rs 1,455. Sun Pharma, Mahindra & Mahindra, Sterlite and Hero HOnda are up in green.

Banking stocks have gained. ICICI Bank is up 1.5% at Rs 814. SBI has advanced 1.2% to Rs 1,938. HDFC Bank is marginally up at Rs 1,580.

However, metal stocks continue to show weakness. Tata Steel has dropped 3.6% to Rs 538. Hindalco has slipped 2.2% at Rs 138.

Wipro and NTPC are down around 1% each.

The BSE market breadth has once again turned positive with trades of 1,409 stocks on the positive side. About 1,305 stocks have declined of a total 2,805 traded on the exchange.
