The markets are trading firm on the back of strength in oil and FMCG stocks. The Sensex is at 17,178, higher by 156 points, and the Nifty is at 5,103, up 51 points.
Reliance has been the top Sensex gainer after it placed a bid for a controlling interest in LyondellBasell Industries. The stock is trading up 3.2% at Rs 2,193.
ITC has touched a 52-week high of Rs 267 on the BSE. The company recently increased the prices of its cigarette brands, India Kings and Benson & Hedges, by Rs 10 and Rs 5, respectively.
Tata Steel, Tata Power and ICICI Bank have added between 1% and 2% each.
Bharti Airtel, however, has shed 2.6% at Rs 281 due to continuation of the tariff war and Hindalco is down nearly 1% at Rs 133.
The market breadth is strong. Out of 2,675 stocks traded so far, there are 1,643 advancing stocks as against 953 declines.
