Markets trim losses

The indices have recouped some of their losses in the past one hour, thanks to buying in metals, consumer durables and pharma stocks. The Sensex is now quoting at 16,953, down 44 points, and the Nifty is at 5042, down 12 points.

The benchmark indices had opened on a lacklustre note in line with the sideways movement seen globally.

The U.S. stocks fell on Wednesday on worrisome outlooks from major software makers and a decline in new home construction last month. And the Asian stocks continue to trade in uncertain teritory.

The leading Sensex gainers are Tata Steel (stronger by 1.3% at Rs 554), Tata Motors (higher by 1.3% at Rs 654) and ACC (up 1% at Rs 737).

The top Sensex losers are Jaiprakash Associates (shed 2.2% at Rs 232), M&M (weaker by 1.2% at Rs 1,015) and DLF (lower by 1.1% at Rs 376).

The market breadth is positive. Out of 2,500 stocks traded on the BSE, there are 1,423 advancing stocks as against 989 declines.
