The Medical Council of India(MCI) has recommended derecognition of eight medical colleges across the country, six of which are run by the Government.
While five of the medical colleges were from Madhya Pradesh, one each was from Maharashtra, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh, the Lok Sabha was informed today.
In reply to a question, Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said, the MCI inspects the colleges in order to maintain the standard of medical education and health services in the country.
The medical colleges which are found not meeting the requirements as per MCI regulations are recommended to Central Government for withdrawal of recognition under section 19 of Medical Council Act.
"The state governments, the concerned university and the medical colleges are consulted and given enough opportunity before any decision is taken in the matter," he added.
The medical colleges which were derecognised include MGM Medical College, Indore, Shyam Shah Medical College, Rewa, BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur and B R Ambedkar Medical College, Bangalore.
