| Mobile handset shipments to India grows 6.7% |

Mobile handset shipment to India has risen by 6.7 per cent to cross the 100-million units mark in the year ended June 2009 against 94.6 million units in the past year, IDC India today said.
This year an overall 100.9 million units have been shipped into the country, of which Nokia has the largest share at 56.8 per cent, followed by Samsung at 7.7 per cent, according to research firm IDC's India Quarterly Mobile Handsets Tracker, 2Q 2009.
LG ranked third with a 5.4 per cent share in the 12-month period ended June 2009.
"The number of emerging mobile handset vendors in the Indian market has grown to reach 26 in Q2 CY2009," IDC India Associate VP (Research) Deepak Kumar said.
This is against only 11 emerging vendors representing A share of 1.2 per cent of overall shipments during the previous 12-month period (July '07-June '08), he added.
IDC expects the Indian handset market to get further crowded, especially in the lower and mid-market segments.
"At the same time, an accelerated evolution of the market is at work, as the rising competition forces vendors to offer newer, richer features at attractive price points," Kumar said.
