The first modern terminal market (MTM) in Orissa, spread over an area of 60 acres, is set to come up in Sambalpur at an investment of Rs 80 crore.
The state agriculture department has embarked on the process of selecting a private enterprise for developing such a market on BOO (build, own, operate) basis.
The horticulture department has appointed Yes Bank as the consultant to advise it in bid process management.
The proposed MTM envisages providing core market services like electronic auction, cold storage, ripening chambers, cleaning, sorting and grading facilities, and packaging and labelling units with support infrastructure such as water supply, power, drainage, banking and postal facilities.
Besides, it would also offer non-marketing services like cash and carry stores, business centre services, kissan ghar, petrol pump, hotels and restaurants, food kiosks, shopping complex and service infrastructure such as sanitary facilities, rest rooms and parking facilities.
The proposed MTM seeks to strengthen the existing supply chain of perishable produce by creating strong backward linkages through collection centres and strong forward linkages through tie-ups with retailers, processors and exporters.
