| MTNL strike called off; services to be restored |

MTNL phones, which have become dead in the past two days throwing even emergency services like hospitals and airports in Delhi and Mumbai out of gear, will ring by tonight as agitating executives have called off their strike.
"The strike has been called off. Our telecom services were disturbed for the last two days. MTNL employees are taking extra care to see the network operates smoothly. We hope everything will be alright by tonight," MTNL Chief R S P Sinha told PTI.
He said the management would talk to executives over the pay revision issues and "would work out a solution in the best interest of the company and employees" without giving any details of the solutions arrived at.
MTNL Employees Union General Secretary V K Tomar said, "The strike has been been called off. The order of five per cent fitment that was affecting the employees has been withdrawn."
When asked about the possibility of flight of MTNL customers to private operators due to inconveniences caused by the strike, Sinha said, "I do not fear any shifting of customers.., our services are good."
About the services restoration of emergencies like hospitals and airport as well as banking services, he said, "They were no doubt affected but the problems are soon going to be over for everybody."
Sources, however, said that a joint committee comprising representatives of executives and the management is likely to be constituted to sort out the contentious issues amicably.
Nearly 4,000 executives of MTNL had struck work for the last two days demanding pay revision with 30 per cent fitment benefit, while the management had offered fitment benefit of five per cent.
"Executives are not revising the financial implication of their demand of 30 per cent rise in fitment. With this the company will not be able to sustain in the future... MTNL's salary bill has gone up to Rs 2,200 crore in 2009 from Rs 1,000 crore in 2003," Sinha had said.
The management had offered a pay revision with five per cent fitment benefit.
