Protesting against the top management, around 8,000 gazetted executives of state-owned Mahangar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) struck work for the second day, disrupting services in many parts of Delhi and Mumbai.
The MTNL Executives’ Association has been demanding implementation of the government’s orders on 30 per cent fitment rise without housing rent allowance (HRA) capping. The management, however, has implemented 5 per cent fitment with HRA capping.
The strike is expected to continue tomorrow as a settlement has not been reached. V K Tomar, General Secretary of the Association, said: “Ours is an indefinite strike which will go on till the consensus is reached. We have not even met the CMD yet, we are only talking to his officials, who are asking for the matter to be taken up later.”
R S P Sinha, Chairman and Managing Director, MTNL, said, “These people (executives) are not realising the financial implication of their demand of 30 per cent rise in fitment. With this, the company will not be able to sustain in the future. MTNL’s salary bill has gone up to Rs 2,200 crore in 2009 from Rs 1,000 crore in 2003.”
Sinha said non-cooperation should not result in cutting of cables and pairs, which has happened and disrupted the services in various parts of these cities. “We have lodged an FIR. The optical fibres have been cut in connivance with these executives. This is criminal,” he said.
