Mysore to witness another rural religious fair at T Narasipur
BS Reporter / Chennai/ Mysore Jan 04, 2010, 00:17 IST

After the ‘Panchalinga Darshana’ religious fair in the sand-town of Talakad, Mysore district is gearing up for yet another festival, the mini-Kumbhmela at T Narasipur, the headquarters of the Thirumakudalu Narasipura.

District authorities have started preparations for the eight Kumbhmelas on the banks of the sacred confluence of the rivers Cauvery, Kapila and the mythical Saraswathi. The fair will begin on January 28 and conclude on January 30.

At a preparatory meeting held at T Narasipur, attending by a host of religious heads, additional deputy commissioner Betsurmutt said the government would be requested to sanction Rs 1.5 crore for arrangements at the holy ‘Sangam’ for the large number of pilgrims who throng during the three days to take a holy dip at the confluence of the three rivers and worship in the temples around in the town.

Various departments have been asked to take up the works for providing facilities to the pilgrims, who visit the sacred place from this part of the region and neighbouring states, and complete them by the middle of the month, he said.

Shivaratri Deshikendra Swamiji, head of Suttur Mutt, sought permanent infrastructure for the scores of pilgrims who also visit the town during the Ugadi festival.

A suggestion to improve the roads leading to the different temples in the town with roadside lights was made by zilla parishat president Siddarth. Apart from the main temple of Agasthyeswara, the town has Hanumantheswara, Gargeswara, Anandeswara, Moolasthaneswara and Bhikesheswara. He also sought restoration of these old temples.

The unchecked removal of sand from the river bed has made deep cuts in the river bed and hence necessary precautionary steps, including sandbag fills, were needed to warn the pilgrims intending to take the holy bath in the river, he said.

Adichunchanagiri Mutt head Balagangadharanatha Swamiji, Onkarashrama Mutt head Madhusudhanandapuri Swamiji, and Swamijis of other mutts participated in the meeting.
