Nalco Q4 net up 371%
BS Reporter / Kolkata/ Bhubaneswar May 17, 2010, 00:56 IST

National Aluminium Company (Nalco) has recorded a 371 per cent jump in its net profit at Rs 391.48 crore for the fourth quarter (January-March) of 2009-10 as against Rs 83.02 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal.

The surge in net profit came on the back of the enhanced volume of production and sales, improved consumption patterns of input materials and increasing price trends in the London Metal Exchange (LME).

Increasing aluminium prices on the LME helped the navratna company to post a better sales realization of alumina as well as aluminium during the said quarter.

However, the company's overall net profit for 2009-10 recorded a sharp fall of 34.55 per cent at Rs 832.6 crore compared to Rs 1272.22 crore posted in 2008-09.

Nalco's turnover at Rs 5310.46 crore in 2009-10 was a marginal decline of 3.8 per cent over Rs 5531.06 crore in 2008-09.

The company scaled an all-time high in production of alumina and aluminium in the last fiscal.

Nalco's aluminium output at 4.31 lakh tonnes in 2009-10 was a 14.4 per cent growth over 3.61 lakh tonnes in 2008-09.

Similarly, the aluminium major clocked a record production of 15.92 lakh tonnes alumina hydrate in 2009-10, achieving a capacity utilization of 101.05 per cent and posting a marginal growth over 15.77 lakh tonnes in 2008-09. Power generation at the company's captive power plant also went up from 5541 million units in 2008-09 to 6295 units in 2009-10.
