Nano pushes Tata Motors July sales up 27%
BS Reporter / New Delhi Aug 04, 2009, 15:57 IST

The country’s largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles, Tata Motors, today posted its first monthly sales growth, on a year on year basis, in 2009 in July. Total sales of commercial vehicles grew by 27 per cent last month to 28,408 units. Brisk demand was seen in the light commercial vehicle segment (which grew by 44 per cent to 17,750 units ) and in the medium and heavy commercial vehicle segment (which grew by 6 per cent to 10,658 units.)

The company which began retail deliveries of its passenger car, Nano, last month grew by 17 per cent selling 17,191 units of both cars and utility vehicles in the domestic market. The number sold for the same month last year was 14,652 units. The monthly figures pertain to both sales and distribution off take.

The company has so far delivered 2475 units of the Nano. Sales and deliveries of the high end Jaguar and Land Rover which began last month, according to Tata Motors, has been a success with much of the imports meant for India witnessing advanced bookings.

However, overall exports for Tata Motors for the month of July 2009 dipped by 34 per cent to 2455 units.

The second largest car company by sales in the country, Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL), today posted a robust domestic growth of 54 per cent for the month of July 2009.

The company sold 23,193 units of vehicles compared to the 15,066 units notched last year. The growth comes on the back of good demand witnessed for the A2 models like the i 10 and the i20.

Arvind Saxena, sr vice president (marketing & sales) of HMIL says domestic demand for cars which grew at a measly pace of about 4 per cent for the period April – June 2009 is coming back. “The market is stabilizing at this point and in the coming months we hope to see both the export and the domestic market picking up. There exists strong demand for the i 20 in the domestic market.”

On the export front, the company which is the largest exporter of cars from the country grew by 6 per cent to sell 22,350 units.

General Motors which manufactures the Chevrolet badged vehicles for the domestic market posted a dip of about 14 per cent selling 4914 units of vehicles.
