Nazara plans new games for festive season
Jayajit Dash / Kolkata/ Bhubaneswar Sep 22, 2009, 00:17 IST

Keeping in view the robust demand for mobile downloads during the festive season, Mumbai-based Nazara Technologies Limited, one of India’s leading mobile entertainment companies, plans to roll out three games soon on the mobile platform.

The mobile entertainment firm is betting big on the high demand for mobile games during the festive season and is expecting more than one lakh downloads within a month.

“Mobile downloads, particularly the downloading of games pick up significantly during the festive season and we are going to launch three games to capitalize on this huge demand. These games would bring us incremental revenues to the tune of Rs 50 lakh in the festive period alone”, Nitish Mittersain, chief executive officer, Nazara Technologies told Business Standard.

Nazara has developed the content for these soon to be launched mobile games which would be based on the themes of Durga Puja and Deepawali. These games can be downloaded at Rs 50 each.

The first game to be rolled out during the festive season is the Durga Shakti. This is a mythological game in which the player has to play Goddess Durga seated on a gigantic lion.

Durga Shakti consists of four levels and in each level, the player has to kill the demons.

Earlier, Nazara Technologies had also launched games during the Lok Sabha elections and the Indian Premier League (IPL) to cash in on the hype surrounding these two mega events.

Meanwhile, Nazara is planning a couple of big launches on the DTH (direct to home) platform within two months. The gaming firm is in talks with a host of DTH providers including Dish TV, Tata Sky, Big TV and Sun DTH.

“The technology for launching games on the DTH platform is relatively and this has somewhat delayed our proposed launch of games on this platform. However, we will be coming up with two big launches on the DTH platform within a couple of months”, Mittersain said.

Besides, Nazara is also gearing up to launch innovative games and applications for the Android phones powered by Google. The company is mainly looking to tap the markets in western Europe and USA for the games on Android phones.

Among the games being developed by Nazara for the Android phones include Rounders, Catch Butterfly and Penguin Jump. The company is also developing services related to numerology for the Android system.

Android is a software platform and operative system for mobile services developed by Google. Among the mobile handset manufacturers who would be rolling out mobile phones that will run on Android include Samsung, HTC, LG Electronics and Motorola.

Although Android is still at its infancy, it has been successful in creating much hype and is expected to emulate the iPhone in terms of mobile downloads.

In this segment, Nazara is aiming at 5,00,000 downloads within a year with the price of each downloadable content ranging from $1-3.

Nazara clocked a revenue of Rs 35 crore in 2008-09 and it is aiming at a revenue of about Rs 50 crore for 2009-10.
