The National Commission for Enterprises in the Unorganised Sector (NCEUS), the nodal body for the tiny and micro units in the unorganised sector formed under the ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises way back in 2004, is expected to be dissolved by this month-end.
The move would deprive more than one crore small, micro and tiny enterprises in the country from a platform or any representation in the ministry, pointed out Savitur Prasad, joint secretary of NCEUS.
Speaking on the sidelines of an interactive seminar, organised by the Indian Federation of Tiny Enterprises, on consultation about the condition of work and environment, Prasad said, “The commission chaired by Arjun Sengupta has been recommended for an extension of atleast one year by the MSME department to look into the problems of the tiny and small enterprises in the country who have not received adequate attention. The larger share of the pie has always gone to the medium enterprises having an obvious advantage over the tiny and medium enterprises, but it seems unlikely that the government will stay the order.”
The commission had submitted six reports related to the problem of small and tiny units and would further submit another eight reports by the end of the month before the commission was dissolved, Prasad pointed out. Some of the chief problems faced by the tiny and small units which needed to be addressed immediately, were lack of funds and infrastructure, proper skill and training, a separate policy and ministerial department, said B L Baheti, secretary general, Indian Federation of Tiny Enterprises (IFTE).
