With over 4000 villages bearing the brunt of flood fury in Karnataka, volunteers feel relief operation on a war footing is the need of the hour.
There is an urgent need to step up relief in the villages which have borne the brunt of the recent rains, and especially, farmers who have been rendered homeless while their crops have been destroyed, a volunteer, working for an NGO, who has been camping in the district for the past one week, said.
In Bijapur district, where floods have taken a toll of 33 lives and damaged thousands of houses, farmers in the taluks of Muddebihal, Basavana Bagewadi, Sindagi and Indi, are finding it tough to cope with the situation.
“Sunflower, Tur dal and Jowar crops grown in over 1,000 hectares in these taluks have been destroyed affecting over 700 farmers”, the volunteer said.
Ningappa Konduguli of Chandkavate village in Sindagi taluk, said, “The tur dal which I had grown in 32 hectares of land has been devastated. Each hectare is going to cost me over Rs one lakh while the compensation announced by the government is Rs 2,000 per hectare. How is that going to help me?”.
Ningappa, who has three daughters and a son, lost all his belongings, including foodgrains, clothes, utensils, cash and gold, which he had kept for his daughters, in the floods.
