Workers of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd (NLC) called off their six-day strike after an agreement between the management and the two major unions. The end came after a seven-hour dialogue, which extended till midnight on Monday.
The two major unions were the DMK-backed NLC Workers Progressive Union and the PMK-affiliated Pattali Thozil Sangam. There are about 14,000 permanent workers. The strike was estimated to have meant a production loss of Rs 40 crore.
State labour commissioner Jagannatha Rao took part in the talks. The dispute was on pay revision. “Disputes have been resolved. These included additional incremental, service weightage and allowances,” as per the agreement additional incremental will come in effect from June 1, 2007, and weightage and allowances will come from September 1, 2009.
Calling the settlement a “good one for the workers”, Union representatives said the monthly salary increase for a worker would be between Rs 7,000 and Rs 13,000. The minimum take home pay for a worker will be around Rs 24,000. Wage arrears received by each worker would be Rs 1-2.25 lakh, they added.
NLC’s wage bill is expected to go up by Rs 300 crore every year and for the current year, the payment of arrears wage bill will go up by around Rs 600 crore, according to a company official.
