Nagarjuna Fertilisers and Chemicals Limited (NFCL) has ramped up its urea production capacity to 1.56 million tonne per annum from the earlier 1.19 million tonne per annum at an estimated cost of Rs 200 crore in phases. NFCL has two units. While Unit-I was commissioned in 1992 and uses natural gas as feed and fuel, Unit-II began in 1998 and can operate on naphtha and natural gas mix. The company had embarked on the revamp anticipating better availability of natural gas from the RIL K-G Basin.
This would also result in reduced energy consumption from 5.66 Gcal per tonne urea to 5.5 Gcal. The increased urea production would reduce the imports substantially. The recovery of 450 tonne per day carbondioxide from flue gases following the revamp would also qualify as a clean development mechanism project, a release said.
