Digital imaging equipment maker Nikon has undertaken a major exercise to penetrate smaller cities and towns, increasing distribution channels, to double its overall sales and market share.
The company, which earlier had only one national distributor, said it has appointed 22 distributors this year and plans to add six more by the end of the financial year.
"Earlier we were not directly dealing with our dealers. It was done through our national distributor. Now we want to widen our distribution network," Nikon India Managing Director Hidehiko Tanaka told PTI. These moves should ensure 1,200 retail points across the country by the end of this fiscal, he said.
Currently, the company has around 800 retail points. "Our objective is to expand our presence in smaller cities and towns like Lucknow, Chandigarh, Dehradun and Pune. So, we are in the process of appointing distributors in these regions," Tanaka said.
The Japan-based company said it expects to double its overall sales as well as its share to 13 per cent in the Indian compact camera market by the end of this fiscal.
