Nokia's Lumia to hit Indian mkt this month
Press Trust of India / Udaipur Dec 01, 2011, 19:03 IST

Finnish cell phone maker Nokia plans to launch 'Lumia', its first smartphone based on Windows operating system, in India this month.

Lumia, the first offering following the partnership between Nokia and software maker Microsoft, was launched globally in October.

The new product is expected to provide much-needed boost for the Finnish entity in the highly competitive smartphone segment.

"We expect to launch Lumia in the middle of December and things are on track. We will introduce two models -- Lumia 800 and 710 in the Indian market," Nokia's Director and Head of Smart Devices (India) Vipul Mehrotra said today.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Nokia Strategy Sharing Summit 2011 here, Mehrotra said that Lumia has "great design and good package", especially in terms of social integration and user interface.

Noting that pricing is yet to be decided for Lumia in India, he said the 710 model would be at relatively lower price points.

Nokia and Microsoft had unveiled a strategic partnership in February this year.

Looking to strengthen its presence in the dual SIM phones, Nokia today launched two new models -- Asha 200 and X2-02. Already, the company has five models of dual SIM phones in the market.

The Asha models will be manufactured at the Nokia Chennai plant.

Asha 200 would cost around Rs 4,759 while the price of X2-02 is yet to be decided. Nokia is also preparing to launch another model Asha 300 in early January.

Nokia India's Managing Director D Shivakumar said the response for dual SIM phones has been very encouraging. "These phones are doing very well... [they are] also having a positive effect on single SIM phones," he noted.

Further, the Finnish major has launched its DRM free, legal music service for feature phones.

"We have pioneered many initiatives in this space starting with pre-installed music, launch of music albums on mobile phones and then Nokia Music Unlimited for our high end phones.

"The offering of Nokia Music Service on feature phones underscores our commitment to truly democratise music by taking it to the masses," Shivakumar said.
