Non-metro cities thrive on eBay, Jaipur leads
Anil Sharma / New Delhi/ Jaipur September 27, 2007
Jaipur has become the largest base of non-metro global trade sellers on eBay India, one of India's leading online marketplace.

Giving this information here at a Press conference on Wednesday, Ambareesh Murty, director (Marketplace Development), eBay India, said, “There has been a definite increase in number of sellers from non-metro cities selling globally through eBay India”.

Sellers from cities like Shillong, Aizwal, Bakrol, Khanna and Khamaria are successfully trading with countries across the world.

“We see a growth in contribution of smaller cities to the business with 50 per cent of sellers on eBay India being from non-metro cities of the country,” he added.

For Indian global trade sellers from the metros, Jaipur is one of the largest sourcing hubs for gemstones, he pointed out. While exports from non-metro cities are on the rise, their is a scope for local sellers to increase their contribution as they largely act as supply sources to sellers in metros.

An emerging trend is that local merchants in Jaipur and surrounding areas of Rajasthan are benefiting by supplying coloured gemstones and trading globally.

Murty said, “eBay presents a great entrepreneurial opportunity to Indian sellers to sell their products internationally to millions of eBay buyers worldwide. Global Trade on eBay India is seeing significant increase with as many as 7,200 entrepreneurial sellers having benefited from this opportunity."

eCommerce is increasingly becoming mainstream, with entrepreneurial Indians selling online to a wide audience. Today, the eBay community includes more than 241 million registered users worldwide. It provides an international platform where practically anyone can trade.

There has been an increase in the demand for Indian products from buyers worldwide. Buyers from over 150 countries have bought products from Indian sellers.
