Now, pay a fine for unnecessary honking in Mumbai
Press Trust of India / Mumbai Mar 13, 2009, 13:48 IST

Traffic snarls may soon make less noise with the traffic police set to fine those honking unnecessarily in newly created silent zones across the city.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has identified 1,113 locations as 'silence zones' across the city last month and will be putting up signages to demarcate them.

"Honking, exploding crackers, and using loudspeakers in a silence zone are illegal," said Additional Municipal Commissioner R A Rajeev.

Penalties will be imposed on violators of the silent zones by local police and traffic police authorities, he said.

The silent zones in the city cover all schools, colleges, several religious locations, courts and hospitals across the city.

"Tenders have been invited for 50 boards in each of the 24 administrative wards and the boards indicating silence zone will be put up within a month," Rajeev said.

"The signages will play an important role in creating awareness among the people. The responsibility of the BMC will be limited to displaying the boards at the start and end of the silence zone," Rajeev said.
