Taking cognisance of the spiraling prices of vegetables here, the District Administration has launched 24 vegetable retail centres across the district.
To check the soaring prices and to ensure competitive prices to the farmers, the APMCs are authorised to buy vegetables from farmers and sell them to the consumers through their own retail centres.
The farmers who bring their vegetables to the APMCs were to pay cess at the rate of one paise and 5 paise per Rs 100 as market and government cess respectively. This cess on vegetable is now withdrawn to maintain the price stability.
The co-operative societies run by the farmers, farm labourers, Self Help Groups, Consumer Societies, Housing Societies etc can now buy vegetables directly from the producers and sell them to the consumers directly through their own retail centres.
The Assistant Registrar of Co-operative Societies of Arni B D Rathod had, on Wednesday, inaugurated the vegetable retail centre at Arni APMC.
With the launching of the retail centres, the farmers are no more required to bring their produces to the APMC for auction and on the contrary they can sell their produces to the co-operative agencies directly which ultimately helps them to save time and money, the sources further claimed.
