Nicholas Piramal India (NPIL) today signed an agreement with the Center of Biotechnology (CBT) at Anna University in Chennai for exclusive R&D collaboration in the areas of cancer and inflammation.
NPIL expects to start a new research centre in Chennai with an initial investment of Rs 20 crore and a staff strength of 50 scientists.
In a press statement, Arun Balakrishnan, the CBT director, said, “this collaborative effort will pave way for accelerated efforts in research and development in two key areas like cancer and inflammation. The strengths of CBT combined with that of NPIL will help in bringing life saving therapies closer to humanity.”
Somesh Sharma, the chief scientific officer of NPIL, said, “the agreement is designed to fast track the identification and development of plant extracts in the repository of CBT for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and cancer.”
