India's largest depository, National Securities Depositories (NSDL), today said that it has crossed 1-crore demat accounts, with over 40-lakh new accounts coming up in the last two years alone.
These accounts have more than 80 per cent securities held and settled in dematerialised form in India, a company press release said.
Further, the accounts are serviced by 281 depository participants through more than 9,600 service centres across 1,000 cities and towns pan-India, the release said.
According to NSDL, after the successful implementation of the depository system, the company has also set up and is maintaining Tax Information Network (TIN) on behalf of the Income Tax Department.
