| The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has decided to revive its seven-year-old plan to build a 1980 mega watt (MW) power project in Jharkhand.
| |
| Construction work would begin by this year end.
| |
| NTPC had laid the foundation of the proposed 1980MW thermal project at Tandwa in Chhatra district of Jharkhand.
| |
| Former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had done the honours. NTPC said it had now decided to revive the project after a lapse of seven years. NTPC management said it would start construction of the power plant from October this year.
| |
| The power project would be the first Central's sponsored power project in Jharkhand after it was constituted by bifurcating undivided Bihar in 2000. There was inordinate delay in starting the construction work of the NTPC power plant in Jharkhand because of funding issues, said sources.
| |
| The Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Ltd (CMPDI), a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd. (CIL), had prepared the detailed project report (DPR) for the power plant.
| |
| As the proposed power plant was to set up at the pithead of the coalfield, discussions were held between CIL and NTPC to set up the power project with the financial participation of CIL.
| |
| Negotiations on financial collaboration between CIL and NTPC fell through but this delayed the power project by several years. In view of the country's increasing power demand-supply gap, NTPC decided to revive the plan.
| |
| NTPC felt the necessity of building a power plant in Jharkhand and restarted negotiations with the state government and Central Coalfields Ltd to speed up the half-completed land acquisition process recently.
| |
| NTPC's director (technical) R K Jain recently came to the state capital and held discussions with the state government and CCL officials to speed up work on the project.
| |
| Jain said the district administration of Chhatra had allotted 170 acres to begin construction activity at the power project site. |
