NTPC's 4,000 Mw Lalitpur proj may be shifted to Chitrakoot
Press Trust of India / New Delhi Sep 25, 2009, 19:17 IST

The government is planning to shift the proposed Rs 18,000-crore Lalitpur power project to Chitrakoot, in the parched Bundelkhand area.

"The Uttar Pradesh government has told us that they would not give us land in Lalitpur because they are giving that to somebody else. So in place of Lalitpur, they are offering us a new place in Burgad village in Chitrakoot district," Power Secretary H S Brahma said.

"Land (for the project in Chitrakoot) has been identified but there would be problem of water availability. We will be very happy if they provide water to us," Brahma said.

On supply of adequate water for the project, Brahma said, "The state government has assured us water supply. We want to set up 4,000 Mw thermal power plant there. But it would be possible only when water would be available."

Asked when ministry is expecting to get Cabinet approval for the project, he said, "NTPC can do it at its own and does not require Cabinet approval for this project."

Earlier, the government planned setting up a 4,000 Mw power plant in Lalitpur, to be set up by NTPC. The Planning Commission has also firmed up a proposal for project.

Besides this project, the 'Commission' is working on a Cabinet note to attract more investment in the Bundelkhand region.

Apart from the Rs 18,000-crore investment for setting up a 4,000 Mw thermal power project, the central government is considering Rs 8,000 crore investment as recommended by the Samra Committee.

For the development of Bundelkhand region, Rahul Gandhi had led a delegation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on July 28. It (the delegation) had requested for implementation of the Samra committee report.

The committee had recommended a Rs 8,000-crore package for Bundelkhand region and creation of a separate Bundelkhand Development Authority.

Singh had directed Planning Commission Member B K Chaturvedi to examine the demands and work out the details after consulting state governments of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.Besides this project, the 'Commission' is working on a
