The number of passenger cars owned per household in Japan fell for the third straight year in fiscal 2008 as the global economic downturn pummeled auto demand, an industry association said.
The per-household number of privately owned vehicles including mini-vehicles came to 1.086 units at the end of March, down 0.009 unit from a year earlier, according to data compiled by the Automobile Inspection & Registration Information Association.
Although the number of households increased 1.06 per cent, the number of privately owned cars was only up by 0.23 per cent to 57,411,148 units, the association said.
Japanese consumers also switched to mini-vehicles with lower prices and maintenance fee as households became hard-hit by the global recession, it said.
The number of mini-vehicles, with engine displacements of up to 660 cc, came to 16,883,230 units and made up a record 29.4 per cent of the total number of privately owned vehicles, hitting the highest level since the data began to be compiled in 1975, Kyodo news agency reported.
By area, Fukui Prefecture had the largest per-household number of cars, at 1.749 units, while Tokyo marked the lowest figure, at 0.497 units.
