| The state-owned Orissa Hydro-Power Corporation (OHPC) would add 171MW of hydro-power capacity during 11th Plan period (2007-12).
| |
| An additional 150MW of power would be generated from the Balimela Power Station extension project.
| |
| While Potteru Small Hydro-Electric Project (PSHEP) would contribute 6MW, another 15MW of power was likely come from renovation and modernization of hydro power stations.
| |
| The total capacity of the hydel power stations operating under OHPC at present was 1934.88MW. Hydro Power Station at Burla would contribute 275.5MW and Chipilima Power Station about 72MW, while the power generating capacity of Balimela was 360MW.
| |
| Rengali hydro-electric project contributed 259MW in the total generation capacity.
| |
| Upper Indrabati hydro-electric project was the biggest with installed capacity of 600MW.
| |
| State minister of energy S N Patro admitted delay in finalisation of the contract and critical supplies for the Balimela project exopansion work.
| |
| Initially, it was proposed that the project should have 2x60MW units but it was later increased to 2x75MW.
| |
| Besides, the project was transferred from erstwhile Orissa State Electricity Board (OSEB) to OHPC.
| |
| Fresh techno-economic clearance was required for increasing the capacity to 2x75MW, which further delayed implementation. To solve the problem pertaining to supply and erection, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) held a review meeting after which project work was expedited.
| |
| Along with additional hydro-power generation, the state aimed to generate more thermal power through independent power projects (IPPs) and captive power plants (CPPs).
| |
| The combined installed capacity under IPPs and CPPs in the state was about 5945MW.
| |
| This was proposed to be raised by 18,490MW over the next few years.
| |
| The state recently signed memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with 13 companies for setting up IPPs.
| |
| The list included Mahanadi Aban Power Company, GMR Energy, Nabbharat Power, Sterlite Energy, CESC, Tata Power Company, KVK Nilachal Power, Monet Ispat & Energy, Essar Power, Jindal Photo Films, Bhusan Energy, VISA Power and Lanco Group. Power units produced about 1134.16 million units (MU) of power per month now.
| |
| The state bought about 459.69MU of power as its share from central power projects. Out of the total available power, 1370MW was used in Orissa on a monthly basis.
| |
| The remaining 161.5MU was sold as a deemed sale to unscheduled interchange grid, giving the state about Rs 77 crore per month from such sale. |
