Oman, a major oil producing country, has halted its petroleum production as tropical cyclone 'Phet' made landfall at its eastern coast.
The 25th ranked oil producing nation last loaded its ships yesterday, state-controlled Petroleum Development Oman has said.
"We won't load any oil because no ship is able to anchor at our facility due to rough seas," spokesman for state-controlled Petroleum Development Oman Al Busaidy said, adding that none of its facilities has been damaged so far.
The Arabian sea cyclone, packing wind with speed as high as 120 kmph, heading close to Sur, where Oman's three LNG production facilities known as trains are located, the latest storm-path forecast showed.
Meanwhile, "Satellite images showed that the cyclone has weakened falling into category One," UAE's National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology said in a statement.
Heavy rains continue to lash across the eastern coast of Oman accompanied by gusts of more than 110 kmph, the centre has said.
The cyclone, which is expected to hit Gujarat and Pakistan coasts in the next 48 hours, yesterday moved slightly towards Oman shores, generating 26-foot-high waves 200 kms off its coast.
The National Weather Bureau repeated its warning to stay away from the sea and beaches as cyclone Phet has been generating high waves and gusty wind in the Arabian Sea and the Gulf coasts.
