As part of the procedure to get appointed to any senior government job, there is a police verification. So, a private sector gent gave the name of two neighbours as his references. The police duly landed up but neither of the neighbours was at home, so their wives offered to vouch for the to-be-appointee’s bona fides. The policemen reluctantly noted these down and then asked him to provide at least one male as a referee! To be fair to them, since the men of the house had been cited as the references, they were within their rights to not accept their wives’ testimonies anyway.
