The operations of the 600 MW unit of the 2400 MW independent power plant of Sterlite Energy at Burkhamnda near Jharsuguda has been kept suspended yet again due to the opposition of the locals.
As per the decision of the Jharsuguda district collector S N Mihsra, the power plant was allowed to resume following talks with the locals last evening but the plant operations were suspended after running for two hours due to protest from the locals on fly ash emission, said a source familiar with the development.Abhijit Pati, Chief Operating Officer of Sterlite Energy could not be reached for comments.
Meanwhile, the regional office of the State Pollution Control Board has despatched a two-member scientist team to the power plant today to studt the reasons for the emission of fly ash from the power plant.
The team will study the quantum of power so far generated, coal consumption and the condition of boilers and and electro static precipitator (ESP) in the plant. The board will take a final decision on measures after getting the report from the expert team.
According to the officials of the pollution watchdog, the plant since its commissioning last month, operated for ten days out of a total of 16 days. On the remaining six days, the 600 MW unit stayed out of operations due to technical snag of its boiler. The power plant had no problem when it went for oil firing for two days in the initial stage. However, when coal firing was made for power generation, the ESP was not utilized, thus releasing fly ash emission on large scale, the officials said.
After noticing the huge fly ash emission the board authorities had issued direction to shut down the plant on September 4.
It may be noted that the first 600 MW unit of the 2400MW Independent Power plant was inauguarated by the state chief minister last month.
On September 8, the plant was forced to shut down following a road blockade staged by the locals on the huge fly ash emission from the plant.
