OREDA plans 'solar farm' in Bolangir
Bishnu Dash / Kolkata/ Bhubaneswar Mar 04, 2010, 00:58 IST

The Orissa Renewable Energy Development Agency (OREDA), the nodal agency promoting the use of renewable energy in the state, plans to set up a solar farm in Bolangir district.

This will be in line with the solar farms being set up in states like Gujarat and Rajasthan. The proposed farm will come up over 300 acres of waste land.

The infrastructural facilities like road, water supply and power evacuation would be provided by the developer to the prospective companies willing to set up solar power plants in the complex.

OREDA officials have held preliminary discussion with the state owned Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Idco) and the latter has agreed to provide the required land for the purpose.

About 300 acres of land has been identified in Bolangir district and each of the units would be provided 5 acres of developed land per megawatt of power proposed to be generated by them, sources said.

Meanwhile, OREDA is in the process of seeking the host country approval (HCA) for the domestic bio-gas plants to be set up in the state. The programme, called ‘Orissa Household Biogas Programme’, aims to install around 7,000 biogas plants every year in the state.

It is expected to displace carbon intensive non renewable biomass (firewood) which is presently used as primary fuel for cooking purpose.

German Development Agency (KfW) has partnered with OREDA to develop this program and engaged Climate Focus (Germany) and CTRAN Consulting, a leading carbon asset management company to help OREDA in this venture.

After obtaining the approval from the Union ministry of environment and forests (MoEF), the validation of the bio-gas plants project under Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) will be started.
