| Orissa to spend Rs 185 crore on textile, handlooms sector |

To give a boost to the textile and handloom sector in the state, the Orissa government plans to spend about Rs 185 crore over next five years under the state plan.
The perspective plan prepared by the textile and handloom department of the Orissa government proposes to spend this amount for components like handlooms, sericulture and textiles, Arati Ahuja, secretary, textile and handloom department said.
Talking to the media after a review meeting chaired by the chief minister Naveen Patnaik in the state secretariat, Ahuja said, the government plans to spend about Rs 200 crore for the development of these sectors in next five years.
Besides Rs 185 crore proposed for allocation in the state plan, funds available under the schemes like NREGS, SGGSY, Union ministry of commerce and Union ministry of handloom and textiles will be tapped for the development of these sectors.
Sources said, the perspective plan prepared by the department envisages formation of a producer company at the state level, formation of more self help groups (SHGs), weavers’ federations, raw material consortium, yarn depos, common facility centres and training-production centres.
The plan will also focus on technological upgradation, capacity building of the people engaged in the sector, research and development and tie-up with the retail houses for facilitating the product marketing. Besides, the training of the sewing machine operators will also be taken up to ensure their employment locally.
