| Orissa withdraws CGP restrictions |

With improvement in the hydro power generation, the Orissa government has withdrawn the direction issued under section 11 of the Central Electricity Act, 2003 asking all captive generating plants (CGPs) in the state to maximise generation and inject power into the state grid.
This follows the government doing away with 50 percent load restriction on industrial users about a fortnight ago. The restriction was imposed by the State Load Despatch Centre (SLDC) on the basis of an order issued by the government under section 37 of the Central Electricity Act, 2003.
“With the improvement in the hydro power generation, the government has withdrawn the restriction imposed on the CGPs via section 11 of the Electricity Act and it will be effective from 1 August”, a senior official of the state energy department said.
He said, the state is now able to meet the energy demand in both peak and non-peak hours. While the peak demand is averaging 3000 Mw, more than the peak summer demand of 2900 Mw, the non-peak demand is pegged at about 2400 Mw.
With the water level in the reservoirs of the state at comfortable level, the hydro power generation has picked up significantly. The generation from this source during the peak hour is about 1600 Mw and in the non-peak hour about 800 -1000 Mw. Besides, both the units of IB Thermal are supplying 380 Mw to the state grid.
Talcher thermal, which was supplying only 200 mw till yesterday, is expected to supply 300 Mw from today. However, the contribution of CGPs has declined from 300 Mw earlier. The power drawal from the Central pool was about 600 Mw against the entitlement of 1000 Mw.
The 500 Mw second unit (stage-1) of NTPC Kaniha will be operational soon after which it will supply 160 Mw more to the state grid from 230-240 Mw at present.
