Orkut catches the election fever
Announcement / Corporate Apr 07, 2009, 20:02 IST

As the elections fever grips India, we at Google™ India are geared up to bring to you the voice of the nation, through Orkut™ -- the leader in social networking. Orkut has launched an ‘official’ community: “The Voice of Youth  (www.orkut.co.in/loksabha2009)” a fun and colourful hangout , where you will have the opportunity to express your opinion, and find out what others like you are thinking about, during these important elections.

Make yourself heard with Orkut polls! Login to http://www.orkut.co.in/loksabha2009 and answer the following poll questions and many more!

  1. Who is the most non-corrupt politician?
  2. Who is the most good-looking politician?
  3. What's the most important issue facing the country?
  4. Can a celebrity influence your vote?

Freshly designed around the elections theme, the Voice of Youth community will run a public poll among Orkut users and feature a series of interesting & fun questions on everything from voting and politicians to issues of local and national relevance. The poll results will be available in real time and are visible after you answer the question. We will also highlight interesting results as snapshots on the home page of the community. In addition to answering polls, you will be able to suggest a poll of your choice. Voting on all the polls will be closed on April 14th.

The community has a local flavor as well with chat rooms dedicated to every state where people will be able to debate issues specific to that particular state. In a nutshell, this community will highlight the best of what makes elections as exciting as they are in India.

“In this election, more than in any previous one, young people are going to make a difference - either by voting in more numbers or by getting engaged in the democratic process. And Internet is providing them a powerful platform to do just that. Social networks have become a mirror of the real world -- and this community will reflect what is important to all   of us and will help highlight the voice of the nation”, said Vihari Komaragiri, Product Manager, Google India.

Orkut today has 1000-odd communities on politics,  and half a dozen OpenSocial™ applications around the theme of elections, witnessing discussions ranging from ensuring a hygienic political system to policies that would shape the future of the country. With messages to our leaders that are thought-provoking and sometimes humorous, we see young India getting increasingly involved -- activism on the Internet is here to stay.
