Out of the Boxster thinking
BS Motoring / Mumbai October 09, 2004
The Indian link. Three cars which debuted at Paris that are likely to make it to our country. Sooner or later.

When Porsche launched the Boxster in 1996, it was an instant success. Since then, this roadster has evolved, from a 2500cc version of the classic flat-six to a 2700cc unit in 1999 plus a 3200cc S version, and has been consistently voted the best premium roadster in the world.

Now, at Paris, an upgraded Boxster has been unveiled. First off, the 2700cc six-cylinder boxer now develops 240 bhp, while the Boxster S’ 3200cc flat-six produces 280 bhp, up by 20 horses. Which translates to 6.2 seconds for the 100 kph dash for the Boxster and 5.5 for the S, and 256 kph and 268 kph top speeds respectively.

Other changes include a revised chassis, larger wheels, a wider track and of course, a new 911-like front end treatment. The five-speed manual tranny in the Boxster has been revised, while the S gets a new six-speed gearbox. The five-speed Tiptronic S transmission is an option. The Boxster still rules.

Bumper and grind routine

The Skoda Fabia has been given a minor facelift. The bumper, grille, taillamps have all been modified. A new range of interior colours and materials are now in the options list and the facia has been redesigned, with a fresh instrument console and steering wheel. Maybe that’s what Skoda India has been waiting for to launch it in the country.

The grille reaper

The grille treatment first seen in the 2003 Nuvolari concept (and of course on Auto Union GP cars of yore) makes a comeback yet again. After the A6, A3 Sportback and the A8 W12, the revised Audi A4 now gets it.

The A4, S4 and the A4 Avant estate all get updated interiors including a choice of steering wheels, upholstery and technology. Two new FSI direct injection petrol engines make a debut in the new A4, a 255 bhp 3200cc V6 and a turbocharged 200 bhp 2000cc inline four.
