Overall PC sales rise 24% in July-Sept
BS Reporter / New Delhi Nov 27, 2009, 01:00 IST

Renewed consumer confidence reflected in increased demand, during the festive season, giving a strong boost to personal computer (PC) sales. These stood at 2.19 million units in the July-September quarter, up 24 per cent quarter-on-quarter. PC sales comprise both desktops and notebooks.

Desktop sales accounted for nearly two-thirds of total PC sales at 1.46 million units, representing a 15.2 per cent sequential increase. Notebooks grew at 46.4 per cent sequentially, crossing the 700,000 mark in a single quarter for the first time.

HP retained the top spot in overall PC shipments with a market share of 17.1 per cent, while Dell was second with a share of 11.3 per cent, followed by Acer with 11.1 per cent.

In terms of desktop shipments, HP retained its top position with a market share of 12.2 per cent, followed by HCL and Acer in second and third spots, respectively. In notebook shipments, HP was the leader again, with a market share of 27 per cent. Dell retained the second spot, while Acer came third.

The 21 per cent quarter-on-quarter growth in commercial PC shipments was a result of improvements across all sectors, with those to the public sector (government) topping the growth charts during the quarter. “Commercial PC sales can be expected to steadily improve as the economy recovers. The emerging mini-notebook PC category needs to evolve in terms of processing power and graphics capabilities to compete with the mainstream notebook PC form factor. In the quarters ahead, the segment will desperately seek technology innovations to propel it to the next level of functionality and user adoption,” said Sumanta Mukherjee, Lead PC Analyst, IDC India.
