Overseas studies preferred by 78% Ahmedabad youth: survey
BS Reporter / Mumbai/ Ahmedabad Nov 23, 2010, 00:27 IST

When it comes to choosing overseas education, Ahmedabad youth seem to score the highest. According to the second annual 'The Web 2.0 Generation' survey, conducted by Tata Consultancy Services, youngsters from Ahmedabad prefer studying abroad more than any other city.

At 78 per cent, Ahmedabad topped the list as against the 74 per cent from non-metros and 66 per cent from metro cities, the study said. TCS polled over 10,000 school going children between the ages of 12-18 in 11 cities across India during 2009-10 to understand the emerging trends amongst this important group. The national survey showed that India’s youth are more likely to have a mobile phone than not, seamlessly move from fixed to mobile internet, are spending more time online than ever before and have embraced social networks in a uniquely Indian way.

"Nearly half of India’s total population is under the age of 20 and classified under the youth category creating a group of over 459 million* – more than the whole of the American population. This sizeable generation is already shaping the country and will play an incredibly important role in the direction that the nation takes next," said Ajoy Mukherjee, vice president, head, Global Human Resources.

As far as Ahmedabad is concerned, around 85 per cent youth are into social networking, followed by 84 per cent in metro cities.

"We plan to use these of the findings to understand the next generation better and it will help us not just to find the best students, but also guide us as to how and what we communicate with them. This is the new, socially connected India that is important for all of us to better understand," said Mukherjee.
