Driven by the high rate of growth in the sale of notebook personal computers (PCs), the Indian PC market touched 6.5 million units in 2007, according to IDC’s India Quarterly PC Tracker. PC shipments increased 20% year-on-year when compared with 5.4 million units shipped in 2006.
According to the survey, notebook PCs accounted for more than 27% of the total PC shipments for the first time in a calendar year.
Piyush Pushkal, manager, PC research, IDC India, said: "With consumer desktop shipments reporting flat growth, the higher overall growth of the consumer client PC segment signals maturing of the market. The consumer PC category is transitioning from a desktop-centric to a notebook-centric phase of growth."
"Notebook PC shipments accounted for over a fourth of the total client PC shipments in 2007. This healthy trend points to the maturing of the Indian IT market and shift into a new phase of growth - Growth Phase 2.0," added Kapil Dev Singh, country manager, IDC India.
Hewlett-Packard (HP) retained the top spot in the overall PC (notebooks and desktops combined) market with a market share of 21% followed by HCL (13%) and Lenovo (10%).
