PC sales up 24% in Jul-Sept period
Press Trust of India / New Delhi Nov 26, 2009, 15:59 IST

About 22 lakh personal computers were sold in the country during the July-September quarter, recording a 24 per cent quarter-on-quarter growth, on the back of increased demand and economic recovery.

"This performance underlines the recovery in the PC market," IDC India Country Manager Kapil Dev Singh said here today, adding the July-September quarter saw a strong boost from new-found consumer confidence.

Of the total PC sales, desktops accounted for nearly two-thirds at 14.58 lakh units, while notebooks accounted for the rest at seven lakh units.

Personal computer shipments have grown for the last three consecutive quarters after dropping sharply from a peak of 22.59 lakh units in the July-September 2008 to 15.60 lakh units in the October-December 2008.

In the overall PC (notebooks and desktops combined) market, HP retained the top spot with a market share of 17.1 per cent, while Dell (11.3 per cent) and Acer (11.1 per cent) took the second and third spots, respectively.

"Commercial PC sales, can be expected to steadily improve as the economy recovers. Even though the consumer PC segment recorded a faster 28 per cent growth, the industry will need to watch how the recovery in consumer PC shipments unfolds in the quarters ahead," IDC India lead PC analyst Sumanta Mukherjee said.
