Petro varsity to launch doctoral programme
BS Reporter / Mumbai/ Ahmedabad December 21, 2007
The Institute of Petroleum Management, Gandhinagar (IPMG), promoted by the Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC), is planning to establish itself as a one-stop university for oil and gas education.

Along with offering a postgraduate diploma in oil and gas management, the institute is now on the verge of starting a doctoral programme, a weekend programme, company programmes as well as an executive programme.

It is looking at collaborations with premier institutes like IIT Kanpur and IIT Kharagpur and the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad.

It is also seeking to collaborate with international universities and is in the process of signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with an international university soon.

This was revealed by Arabinda Tripathi, director, IPMG, during its three-day conference on management of petroleum sector — ICOMPS ’07.

Addressing the conference, D J Pandian, MD of GSPC, encouraged the institute to have collaborations with international universities to broaden the scope of understanding in this sector.

According to him, issues pertaining to oil, gas and petroleum are international and finding out newer ways of generating energy is the solution to the existing crisis.

In a recent study conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers for Petrofed, the gap between the availability and requirement of trained manpower in India is projected to be about 36,000 by 2019, and the existing institutes may not be adequate to meet the increasing requirement of technical manpower in the petroleum sector.

“This is an exciting time in the petroleum sector with tremendous challenges and opportunities. This is the era of specialised universities and ours is one of them. Seventy per cent of the Indian energy requirements at present is imported. With barrel prices hovering around $100, great challenges are to be faced in this sector due to our dependence on the oil and gas sector. If we can reduce our dependence on oil by 1-2 per cent, we can do a lot for the country, “ added Tripathi.

The event would have around 35 presentations and four keynote presentations.
