BS Reporter / Mumbai January 9, 2009, 10:09 IST

Ajay Bansal, general secretary, Federation of All-India Petroleum Traders said "Only HPCL petrol pumps are running, but they would be out of fuel in the next three hours, aggravating the situation further".

Petroleum minister Murli Deora along with some oil executives is scheduled to meet the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today in his bid to resolve the current crisis.

With the strike entering, Day three over 90 per cent of the country’s petrol pumps have run out of fuel and affected power generation in government-owned power companies.

“The problem manifested itself much quicker than expected because the petrol pumps were low on inventories in anticipation of fuel price cuts. The truckers’ strike, which entered its third day today along with the oilmen strike will increase the hardships of the common man,” said Krishan Kalra, secretary-general, PHD Chamber.

Indian Oil and Bharat Petroleum Corp had asked their employees in Maharashtra to report to work today as the government has invoked the provisions of the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA), which restrains workers from going on strike.

However, as of 1010 hrs IOC officers had not reported to work today despite the government invoking ESMA.

In Maharashtra, the 650-Mw Uran plant of the state-owned Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (Mahagenco) was shut down. The state is already reeling under a power shortage of 4,500 Mw to 5,000 Mw, resulting in power cuts between 3 and 12 hours in urban, semi-urban and rural areas.

The central government-owned Ratnagiri Gas and Power Private Ltd’s (RGPPL) generation, which had dipped from 650 Mw to 300 Mw on Wednesday due to non-availability of gas, is now working at full capacity after RGPPL managed to source the gas from spot market on Thursday, said an official from the state-owned power distribution company, Mahadiscom.

So far, 17 gas-based urea plants have been shut down. “The strike is affecting production. This will lead to shortage of fertiliser and the country will have to import fertiliser to meet the domestic demand,” said Ajay Shriram, Chairman and Managing Director, Shriram Fertilizers and Chemicals.

Mahanagar Gas (MGL), on the other hand, has stopped the supply to the industrial, commercial and CNG segments in a phased manner, for ensuring supply to the domestic consumers. This has led to closure of over five restaurants in Mumbai with more shutdowns in the offing, said the Federation of Hotel and Restaurants Association of India. MGL sources gas from ONGC’s Mumbai High fields.

The oil company executives under the umbrella of the Oil Sector Officers Association (OSOA) began their indefinite strike on Wednesday demanding higher wages.

The irresponsible coverage by Zeenews terming Oil PSU workers Deshdrohi is highly objectionable. we at ONGC are ensuring the energy security of the country by giving our sweat & blood. Please air any view after proper investigation and not just for TRP. I really feel sorry for the entire country where the organs of the democracy are not fulfilling their duty and responsibility. Please first go to depth of any issue then air the show.

ONGC people work very hard not just for themselves but also for us. At present their morale is down and their motivation is nil. Media posed them as traitors and what will happen if this de-motivation effect their work also? Will the government suffer? No, it will be again us. So please do not respond if you do not want to, but do not let the media say anything just for the sake of their higher TRP. ONGCians are people like us. They are not DESHDROHI.

Zee News, do you have these updates and do you really know the reasons of strike? Of course not, because in a country of democracy you media people are being guided by some political forces either for your benefit or under pressure I appeal to the people, sorry, common people of India just like me to just ignore what media says against ONGC.

Role of Media is very crucial and it should play its image. It should not distort the figure. ONGC was give notice of strike to government two months ago, but the strike was deferred due to the terrorist attack on Mumbai. ONGC made several representations to various government departments but the government just ignore them. .

Zee News showed wrong salary comparisons among ONGC and Army and when contacted, these people said that they could not help it because they have the figure from the ministry and directions accordingly. Why figure from ministry, why not from ONGC? At least ONGC people are getting what they are supposed to, not like these politicians. Did Zee News ask these politicians how they manage such a life style which needs at least several lacs of money per month out of salary of few thousands?

ONGC is providing subsidy on items like LPG, Petrol, Diesel, Kerosene Oil etc out of their profit so that common man of India could go on easy on daily expenses. Why not the government is providing the subsidy? After all it is their duty. Last year ONGC paid Rs 22000 Crores for subsidy, Rs 30000 crores as Taxes, Rs 12000 Crores as dividend. But still the ONGCians are Deshdrohi because some News channels like Zee News & others said so on government directions?

ONGC is working in North-East at Assam, Tripura & Nagaland in adverse working conditions. My husband is in ONGC and we have our stay at Assam-Jorhat amongst ULFA people. ULFA were making round in our colonies at night at motorcycles. Generally 20-25 people at a time. On one or two occasions an ULFA was identified by police whom we thought to be an ordinary person. We used to go out in groups, return our home before the darkness of night and live in fear of unforeseen.

Are ONGCians Deshdrohi ? ONGC is an organisation serving for people all across the country. It works in the deep sea on floating platforms where they have no contact with the outer world. In the year 2005 a fire woke up in the platform at Bombay High and several of ONGC people lost their lives either from burning or from drowning. The people reach to the platform through Chopper and several lost lives on different occasions due to accident of the chopper.

It is indeed sad that the whole nation is witnessing helplessly the problems confronted due to the strike by the PSU`s and the truckers. I am surprised to see the government inaction since despite the strike notice the government did not intervene. PSU executives are the most protected, well paid, and face no job risks or threats unlike the private sector. They deserve no sympathy for their harsh attitude. In the present economic and job uncertainty the PSU employees do not get any sympathy

I am pained to see the inaction by the government in preventing the strike. During the days of uncertainity prevailing all around, the oil sector employees are one of the most priveleged group in getting best of the pay and perks. They have no threats of job losses, sitting on the bench problems, or salary cuts which the private sector is witnesing. They should take an example of this and be more passive in expressing their demands. Government should also prove that it has teeth.

Cool
The pay revision for PSU was effected in 1997 and today the cost of living has increased by 300%. But, salary hike was only 17% ( for which PSU are giving proof, but Govt has no proof for 200% hike announcement)effective for next 10 years. A staff in a particular cadre had take-home salary of Rs. 10,000 in 1997. A staff in the same cadre in 2017 will take home Rs.11700. If you are working in a PSU, u can feed your family for only 20 days per month.

What a shame!! Imagne what would have happened if our Armed forces would have gone on the strike for their salary and other work environment related Demands!!! Is it necessary all the time that armed forces and Police need to be patriotic and need to be attached to their moral Responsibilities. This people (oil officers) have no right to bully a common man who is allready in trouble because of economic crisis and Terrorism, Mr. Deora and Mr. Chdambaram please take a strong action.

Asking for higher salary is not a bad thing. but you cannot paralyse the country to get what you want.Inflation is just coming down, the relationship bethween india & pak is still volatile, truckers are in strike and you OIL PSU officers think that it is the best time to blackmail the country.Remember if something happens due to your strike the people of india will never forgive you.if an ambulance runs out of fuel in the middle of the road with a serious patient than you can easily gess...

contd.... It is said the Notice of strike was given long time back. Then what the Ministry was doing all these days. Why the media is not investigating this angle and expose all. Media reports say that the executives of Oil PSUs have been suspended / sacked. Let the country decide whether the babus in the Ministry and their bosses should have been sacked instead. PS: News item. 9/1/2008 : RIL was forced to suspend sale of Oil to Iran ...

There are reports of Hon?ble Petroleum Minister dining and traveling on pilgrimage trips, along with Mukesh Ambani. One can guess who rules the Petroleum Ministry. The Ministry has forced the strike on OIL PSUs by adopting a confrontationist path. This will make way for selling Ambani?s stock. ... Contd..

The government has announced ESMA so they should sack all concern officers and appoint new officers. As it is there are more number of un employment in our country. Let the Government should take strong steps and should not show any mercy on these officers who are blackmailing at the time of crisis.

Election is 3-4 months away. Left group (unions dominated) political parties are not now with UPA. Therefore no one should not expectany relief whether or not strike justified, and may be it may be aggravated and enlarged. people only get relief when they think twice before cast their vote to such political parties and to all survive or disappear from the politics. It is up to the people. s c sekar

The government should not back down. The oil PSU officers are the among the highest earning officers PSU officers in India and their perks are really good. You cannot let them hold the govt. to ransom and this might be a good election year for UPA if it decides to dismiss the whole lot of them and advertise the positions for new candidates. Yes, it will be hardships in the short term, but it would be a good signal to send for such blackmailing tactics.
